Plastic Free July is here and Mullumbimby is rallying again to reduce its plastic footprint!
This year we are focusing on reducing both the supply and demand for single use take away coffee cups.
DONATION LOCATIONS for Boomerang Cups include:
All Mullum Op shops (be sure to say your donation is for the Boomerang Cup initiative!)
Stewart’s Menswear, Made in Mullum, Urban Archeology, Flash Computers & Mullum InStyle Living (be sure to check out their window display of Plastic Free Lifestyle items!!)
These easily avoidable products are made using 100% virgin materials somewhere outside Australia under unknown conditions for the workers and the environment and then shipped to our shores and then trucked to our town just so we can conveniently use them for 10 minutes before we throw them in the bin.
They are never reused and don’t get me started on when, where & how often they are recycled! Just get a reusable take away cup already or have your coffee to stay!
We are asking the community to donate lovely mugs (not the crappy chipped ones you never use) to a community stock of Boomerang Cups that will be distributed for free to all Mullum cafes starting July 1.
There they will be your back up plan when you forget to #BYOcoffeecup.
Donation Locations are being organised around town where you can drop off your lovely mug!

We didn’t ask cafes to get involved in the initiative yet as many are gearing up for their own exciting Plastic Free July initiatives so we are asking non-coffee selling retailers to help us out with the collections over the next couple of weeks. If you are a retailer or know one who might be keen to help please just write on the footpath in chalk and post to Mullumbytes Fb group and we will know you’ve got your hand up! We will drop you in one of these little posters in stands that have been very kindly donated by Mullum InStyle Living????
The Stewart’s Menswear team have even decorated our scruffy crate to make it a little special????
The idea is simple. We want our community to step up as take away coffee drinkers and take away coffee sellers to reduce the number of single use cups coming into our town.
If you are a take away coffee/tea/Chai drinker then chances are you would get use from a reusable coffee cup! Treat yourself to one! There are heaps to chose from and they can be bought locally at Santos, Mullum InStyle, Mullum Camping shop, Lulu’s, Scratch Patissierie, Pure Melt Chocolate and coming soon to The Empire!
Cafes can step up too and do lots to reduce the number of single use cups they hand out. The cups you donate will be offered to all Mullum cafes with a poster to support the initiative called
Boomerang Cups
Same concept as the well known Boomerang Bags, if you forget to #BYOcoffeecup you can borrow one of these:)
Many of our cafes are already signed up with Responsible Cafes to offer their customers a discount when they #BYOcoffeecup and many already sell reusable cups. With the addition of a Boomerang Cup service, our cafes will be making it as easy as possible for their customers to avoid single use coffee cups.
So sign up now to pledge your commitment to avoid single use plastic this July at Plastic Free July and support our cafes by donating a lovely mug or two and let them know you’d love them to ditch the disposables all together!
