The purpose of this event is for people to increase their understanding of the process to raise homes to lift them out of expected flood levels.

This house flooded to approximately 400mm and has been raised since from 300mm off the ground to 650mm

Ritamba will tell you about how the flood impacted the house and what the rebuild and raise involved.   She will be joined by her builder Graham and together they will share with you the process of getting the house raised and the front and back steps/decks contstructed.  They will share their tips and tricks with you including sharing what they may have done differently with the benefit of hindsight.

Everything Ritamba says is to be received as simply her story and any recommendations she makes purely based on her experience with her circumstances. Graham is an experienced builder but we still urge you to have a professional visit your home before acting on any recommendations heard at this Sustainable House Day event.  Mullum Cares hasn’t had Ritamba’s house assessed to prove any statements that it or any part thereof is guaranteed to be water or flood proof so you must receive the information from Ritamba and Graham as simply an account of their experience and decision making processes regarding that house at the time the decisions were made.  Many rules and regulations around house raising are currently in flux.

If you are thinking of raising your home but need to rebuild it first you may consider flood resilient retrofitting techniques and materials in case you don’t end up lifting the house.  The Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation recently published their Flood Resilient Design Framework.  You Can download it here.  This framework has been developed to support the NSW Resilient Homes Program – more information here.
